The journal describes the weather and events of the voyage, stops at Rio de Janeiro and Valparaiso, the organization and constitution of the Fraternal Gold Seekers, and his arrival and stay in San Francisco during the winter of 1850. He records experiences at the mines on the Tuolumne River in 1849, at Nevada City in 1850, and Grass Valley, 1851-1852.
